Baby Towels & Washcloths: Bamboo vs Cotton, Hooded vs Flat (UK Guide)

Baby skin loses moisture faster than adult skin, so what you wrap your baby in after the bath genuinely matters. Here's the short, honest version of the bamboo-vs-cotton debate, plus how many towels and cloths you actually need.

Bamboo vs cotton: the real differences

Bamboo-derived viscose is noticeably softer out of the wash, more absorbent by weight, and stays soft longer without fabric conditioner (which you should skip for baby towels anyway — it coats fibres and reduces absorbency). Cotton — especially organic terry — is more durable over hundreds of washes and usually cheaper. Many of the best baby towels are a bamboo-cotton blend: bamboo softness with cotton structure.

Hooded towels earn their keep

Babies lose heat quickly from wet heads. A hooded towel solves the shivery dash from bath to bedroom, and toddlers keep wearing them as dressing-gown-style cover-ups to age 3–4. Look for 500 GSM+ for proper absorbency and a generous 90×90 cm square — the tiny 75 cm ones outgrow fast.

Washcloths: you need more than you think

Cloths do face-wiping at breakfast, top-and-tail washes, weaning clean-ups and nappy-change duty. A realistic count is 10–12 cloths so a fresh one is always dry. Muslin squares double as washcloths and are gentler for newborn faces; waffle-weave cloths grip better for post-weaning chins.

Washing without wrecking them

  • Wash new towels once before first use (they arrive coated in finishing agents).
  • 30–40 °C with non-bio detergent; skip fabric softener.
  • Tumble low or line-dry inside-out; high heat is what makes bamboo go crispy.

Quick answers

How many baby towels do I need? Three is the sweet spot: one in use, one in the wash, one spare.

What GSM should a baby towel be? 400–600 GSM. Lighter dries faster; heavier feels plusher but takes longer on the airer — worth remembering in a UK winter.

Are bamboo towels antibacterial? Treat marketing claims cautiously — the practical wins are softness and absorbency, and any towel stays hygienic if it dries fully between uses.
