Nappy Bin Refills: The UK Compatibility Guide (Stop Buying the Wrong Cassette)
Every parent has done it once: ordered refill cassettes that don't fit the bin. Nappy bin refills are not interchangeable between systems, and even within one brand there are generations. Here's the map.
How the main systems differ
- Twist-and-seal systems (e.g. Tommee Tippee Twist & Click / Sangenic): the bin twists each nappy into its own sealed pocket of film. Refills are cassettes of continuous antibacterial film; Twist & Click and older Sangenic cassettes overlap but check your bin's generation before bulk-buying.
- Push-and-seal systems (e.g. Angelcare): you push the nappy through a self-closing membrane; the film is a simple liner sleeve. Cassettes are cheaper per nappy but the seal relies on the membrane, so the bin lid matters more.
- Bag-based bins (e.g. Ubbi and standard pedal bins): steel bodies that take ordinary bin liners or scented nappy sacks. No proprietary cassette — cheapest to run, slightly more hands-on with odour.
Before you order refills, check three things
- The exact system name on the underside of the lid or the moulding inside — "Twist & Click", "Sangenic Tec", "Angelcare", etc.
- Cassette shape: twist systems use a deep cassette with film gathered in the middle; push systems use a flat ring. They look similar in photos; the depth gives it away.
- Multipack maths: a cassette wraps roughly 25–30 newborn nappies (fewer as sizes go up). A newborn gets through 10–12 nappies a day — a 6-pack of cassettes is about a month. Multipacks nearly always win on price per nappy.
Making refills last longer
Push the nappy fully down before sealing, don't double-wrap already-bagged nappies, and drop the film seal only once per session rather than per nappy where your system allows. Parents typically report 20–30% more nappies per cassette with these habits.

Can I use ordinary bin bags in a cassette bin? In most twist systems, no — the mechanism needs the cassette film. Bag-based bins are the ones designed for standard liners.
Do refills expire? No — film cassettes keep indefinitely stored away from direct sun, so multipacks are safe to stock up on.
Are there universal cassettes? Compatible third-party cassettes exist for the big systems and can work well — just match the system generation exactly, same as with originals.
